One thing I didn’t have the opportunity to get to in this story about science education is the fact that a little over a year ago, New Mexico could have taken a turn in a very different direction. That’s when 11 states, New Mexico among them, applied for waivers from No Child Left Behind. That’s what’s behind the current A-F school grading system. But unlike seven of those 11 states, New Mexico didn’t propose to have science testing included in its new accountability system. Say what you will about testing, but at the moment “if it’s tested, it’s taught” seems to be the reality. Oops?
