NMED solicits public comment for hazardous waste storage at Sandia

From the New Mexico Environment Department:

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has issued today for public comment a revised draft Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (draft Permit) which would authorize the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and Sandia Corporation to treat and store hazardous and mixed waste at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL).  Today’s draft Permit replaces in full that issued for public comment on August 20, 2007, which was not finalized. The Department is also seeking public comment on a proposal to grant corrective action complete status for 24 areas designated as solid waste management units (SWMUs) or areas of concern (AOCs) at SNL.  The 24 SWMUs/AOCs are sites where environmental investigations have been conducted, and the sites cleaned up where necessary to protect human health and the environment.

Sandia National Laboratories is located within the boundaries of Kirtland Air Force Base south of and adjacent to the city of Albuquerque in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.  SNL is a multi-purpose engineering and science laboratory owned by the DOE and operated by Sandia Corporation, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin.

The NMED has issued a Public Notice that provides locations where the Administrative Record, including the Permit Application, draft Permit, Fact Sheet/Statement of Basis, and other supporting documentation can be reviewed, and provides procedures for submitting comments and requesting a public hearing. Comments and requests for public hearing concerning the draft Permit and the proposal to grant corrective action complete status for 24 SWMUs/AOCs must be received by NMED no later than 5:00 p.m. MST on November 16, 2012.
