Sunday: You can “Do the Math” on climate change

In the July 2012 issue of Rolling Stone, author and activist Bill McKibben talked about the math of climate change. He pointed out that humans can burn 565 more gigatons (billions of tons) of carbon dioxide and still stay below 2°C of warming. Anything more than that, he said, puts life on earth at risk for catastrophe. As the folks at 350.org point out, there are 2,795 gigatons of coal, oil, and gas reserves.

On Sunday, the New Mexico chapter of 350.org, UNM’s Peace Studies Program, UNM students, and community members will be gathering to watch the kickoff of the “Do the Math Tour” McKibben is embarking upon in the United States. The event is from 10:45 to 1:00 at UNM”s Kiva Lecture Hall. Folks can also livestream the event online at:  http://350.org/en/host-livestreaming-party-1118.
